The cost of owning a small plane is about like the cost of owning a car or a home, expensive! It is primarily repairs and maintenance, and with a small plane these are extremely important! With a house, you check the roof and take care of the water and electricity. A leaky roof can damage the contents and if electricity goes haywire, it can mean a fire but will most likely be a day without television. Water means either no toilet or a small flood in the house, inconvenient at worse. With a car it can be a bit more critical with some of the operating systems such as the steering or brakes. Most likely it will be a dead battery, points miss-firing or a flat tire. You just pull over at a garage or gas station and get it fixed. Not really that much problem. If it is the brakes or steering, there is still a good chance you can survive. With poor care on a plane it can easily mean death! So maintenance is important, very important. You have to keep the engine tuned, the plugs clean and even the tires in good shape. The body can get a few dents, but too many and it no longer becomes aerodynamically sound. There are also lots of small pulleys and such that need to be checked, oiled and sometimes replaced if they even show the slightest sign of wear. One cannot stop for repairs in mid-air! These all add up to higher expenses than most people realize, much higher than for a house or a car. Then there is the expense of landing fees and hanger fees. Unless you are Richie Rich, you will not likely have your own landing strip and even if you do you will be using the plane to go places, and each place charges a landing fee. These fees can be several hundred dollars. This is to pay for the strip maintenance as well as air traffic controller salaries. If you keep your plane in a hanger, and it is needed during storms, those are more fees! Then there are fuel costs plus don’t forget insurance! A small plane can be fun and exciting. It give you a sense of freedom and the ability to travel further distances in a shorter time than any thing else, but you will pay for the fun and privilege!
